Diego Schissi

Diego Schissi (born February 5, 1969 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine pianist, composer, and arranger who has redefined contemporary tango by fusing it with jazz and chamber music. The son of renowned actor and playwright Oscar Viale, his passion for music was sparked at a very early age, influenced by the Astor Piazzolla vinyl records his father played at home.

From a young age, Schissi showed a keen interest in music. He began his studies at the López Buchardo National Conservatory, where he began playing guitar before turning to piano and composition. At the age of 20, he traveled to the United States to further his exploration of jazz at the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors in 1996. These beginnings laid the foundation for a career marked by the exploration and fusion of styles.

Back in Argentina, his career was consolidated through various projects and collaborations, culminating in the founding of theDiego Schissi QuintetIn 2009, with this group, he has taken tango to new frontiers by integrating elements of jazz and chamber music, creating a unique sound language that combines tradition and innovation.

In 2024, Schissi won theLatin Grammy in the Tango categoryfor his albumApiazolado, a bold reinterpretation of Astor Piazzolla's work that reaffirms his ability to create music that transcends genres and connects with audiences around the world.
